Jong is the second partner to hold the position which was newly created in August 2016 alongside two further positions – managing partner, Americas and managing partner, Europe and Middle East – in a move to provide greater focus on geographic responsibilities. Jong told Asia Business Law Journal her long-term strategy in her new role included developing a stronger Asia-based clientele while at the same time continuing to serve the clients of the global firm.

She said there were certain areas, however, that deserved some focus. “I do believe that cybersecurity and fintech are areas for development, and Singapore [requires] focus to strengthen the comprehensive offering we already have in commodities, trade and shipping.”

Based in the firm’s Hong Kong office, Jong trained with the firm in London and became a partner in 1998. She was admitted to the English bar in 1993 and Hong Kong bar in 1994. Her career has focused on corporate transactions and investments in Greater China and Southeast Asia.

Jong served as a board member on the firm’s executive committee from 2008 to 2015, and she presently serves as a co-chair for the global corporate practice. She will continue to service clients alongside her new management role.

“Reed Smith’s practice in Asia has grown considerably in the past decade thanks to Roger’s leadership and the commitment of our partners throughout the region to our shared vision,” said Jong. “I look forward to continuing to grow the practice in line with the firm’s business needs and using my experience of working in the region to ensure Reed Smith is able to best serve its clients.”
