IBLJLaw Firm Awards 2026
29 June 2026
Setting the benchmark for legal excellence in India
India’s legal market has experienced another demanding year, moving in step with an economy that is increasingly global, regulated and rapidly changing. A buoyant transaction pipeline, deeper regulatory scrutiny, fast growth in technology-led sectors, and the expanding influence of AI, data protection, renewable energy and private capital have all pushed law firms to become swifter, more specialised and more commercially fluent.
Strong capital markets activity, sustained investment and a steady stream of work have kept deal teams busy, while technology-led business models have pushed advisers deeper into questions of data governance, platform regulation and emerging risk.
Clients have also become more demanding with legal work regarding clarity, responsiveness and commercial judgement. Across sectors, firms are expected to manage complexity without slowing execution, and offer solutions that stand up to scrutiny from regulators, counterparties and boards.
The 2026 India Business Law Journal Law Firm Awards reflect that evolution, recognising firms that combined technical rigour with responsiveness, sector knowledge and the ability to deliver under pressure.
As well as AZB, five more firms are recognised as Best Overall Law Firms. These are law firms that dominate the Indian legal scene: AZB & Partners, Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, JSA, Khaitan & Co, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co, and Trilegal, each demonstrating renown among their clients for their legal service delivery.
Our awards span 38 categories this year, encompassing important practice areas and sectors. Most award categories have seven winners, and they are all of equal standing.
To better reflect the depth of expertise in the market, certain categories have been divided into two tiers: one for firms with 100 lawyers or fewer, and the other for firms with more than 100 lawyers. Further details about the judging process can be found in the methodology.
Award highlights
Our Law Firm of the Year, AZB & Partners, stands as a powerhouse of legal excellence, orchestrating some of the most complex and high-value transactions with precision and flair. The firm’s capabilities reach across a wide variety of practice areas. Rajiv Gandhi, company secretary & compliance officer at Bajaj Auto, praises the firm, saying: “We have found AZB & Partners’ services to be of very high quality, professional and solution oriented.”
Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas held the coveted Law Firm of the Year title in 2025, and has ranked among the top five for years, securing its top spot once more thanks to impressive achievements across practice areas. The globally recognised law firm has again been a part of numerous blockbuster IPOs and deals through 2025.
I Bobby Majumder, senior partner at FBT Gibbons, commends the firm saying CAM is “a great firm with great lawyers; very good bleeding-edge practices like fintech, as well as more traditional areas of expertise.”
JSA has blended scale with sophistication to deliver landmark transactions, precedent‑setting disputes and transformative financings. Its capabilities include several major practice areas, in which they have exhibited regulatory mastery, cross‑border precision, and a commitment to innovation, diversity and impact.

Ken Lefkowitz, a partner and deputy chair at Hughes Hubbard in New York, vouches for the firm’s services: “I have 40 years of experience advising on mergers and acquisition deals for industry-leading companies. It is clear to me that our mutual clients view JSA as a vital partner in building their businesses, not just lawyers who advise on isolated legal issues.”
Khaitan & Co has blended more than a century of heritage with scale and sophistication. Its capabilities span the full spectrum of corporate, capital markets, M&A, restructuring and cross‑border mandates, executed across industries and geographies.
Robert Appelbaum, executive consultant at Webber Wentzel in Johannesburg, said: “[Khaitan & Co’s] service is impeccable and they are very business-like.”
Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co has deployed cutting‑edge innovation across capital markets, banking, restructuring and M&A. Commending the firm, Brodie Same, general counsel at real estate advertising company REA Group in Melbourne, said: “They are commercial, understand our business and our key commercial objectives deeply, and can provide appropriate advice that protects key risks.”
With a blend of precision and creativity, Trilegal has positioned itself as a trusted partner for clients navigating India’s most sophisticated legal and regulatory challenges.
Kuntal Parikh, general manager at Adani Enterprises, has worked closely with the firm’s lawyers. “I have found their legal insight and execution capabilities to be very good. They have demonstrated the ability to deliver under tight timelines,” he says.
JUDGING THE AWARDS
India Business Law Journal’s Law Firm Awards have been presented annually since 2009. The results are based on nominations and qualitative information received from in-house counsel and other senior corporate executives in India and around the world, as well as from India-focused lawyers at foreign law firms. Submissions received from Indian law firms played a supporting role in the judging process.
A nomination form was posted on our website in February and April, and shared widely by email and social media. Nominations were received from hundreds of Indian and international companies and international law firms, including: ACME, Adani Enterprises, Adani Power, AIA Engineering, Ajinkya Rahane, Akasa Air, Altera Digital Health (India), Ampin Energy, Ashoka Buildcon, AstraZeneca Pharma India, Axis Capital, BCCL, Cube Highways, Damodar Valley Corporation, Data Oceano Software, Experion Developers, Eye Kare Kilitch, Factory Mutual Insurance Company, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, Gallagher Centre of Excellence, Goodwill Theatre, Goosehead Insurance, Gridlogic, Gujarat Industries Power , HCL Technologies, Hitachi Systems India, Ib Vogt Solar India, IG International, IKM Investors, Il Jin Electronics, Imagine Marketing (boAt), Integreon, JM Financial, KPMG India Services, LG Electronics India, LMW, Lodha Group, LTM, Madhya Pradesh Power Transmission, Matrix Comsec, MoMagic Technologies, Moneyboxx Finance, NAM Securities, National Spot Exchange, New India Assurance, NITI Aayog, Nojoto, NorthEast United Football Club, Nuvama Wealth Management, Om Logistics, Optimystix Entertainment India, Patanjali Foods, Pavilions and Interiors, Pegasus Fininvest Advisory, Pegasus India Evolving Opportunities Fund, Performia Automations, Petronas Lubricants (India), Redaptive Services, Refyne, IndusInd General Insurance, Rising Pune FC, Rolent Capital Services, Samsara Fund Advisors, Samvardhan Motherson International, SBI, SBI Capital Markets, SBL, Social Alpha, Sodhi & Co, StarTek, Sunpack India, T9L Venture Studios, Tata 1mg, Tata Capital, Tata Power, Tradejini Financial Services, Translumina, Trusting Social Indonesia, UBT, Uflex Limiter, Unicharm Corporation, Veradigm, Volar Alta, Webber Wentzel, Welspun, Zepto and many more.
Indian law firms were not permitted to make nominations. However, all major Indian law firms were invited to make submissions in support of their candidacy for awards. The submissions included details of their achievements in law firm development and in key practice areas, as well as a peer assessment. These submissions, combined with reference checks and research by IBLJ’s editorial team, played a supporting role in the judging process. All Indian law firms were automatically eligible for inclusion in the awards process, regardless of whether they made a submission.
As always, there were no entry fees, submission charges or any other requirements for entry. There are seven winners in most categories with six Best Overall Law Firms and one Law Firm of the Year. To better reflect the depth of expertise in the market, certain categories have been divided into two sections, one for firms with 100 lawyers or less, and the other for firms with more than 100 lawyers.
It is important to note that the IBLJ Law Firm Awards are not comprehensive rankings of the leading law firms in each practice area. While rankings typically list all the top-tier firms in each category, each of our awards has a limited number of winners. As a result, many leading law firms do not win awards, and their absence does not reflect negatively on their achievements and expertise.
