M&T expands with Beijing, Shanghai hires

Merits & Tree Law Offices has appointed four partners – Zhang Yifei in its Beijing headquarters, and Yu Jie, Chen Xiao and Yang Cheng to its Shenzhen branch.

Zhang’s practice focuses on M&A, investment and financing. He joined a private equity fund in 2007 and handled investment and M&A transactions for clients such as Kingsoft, Xiao Nan Guo Restaurants, China Modern Dairy, Cofco Group and Mengniu Dairy, North China Pharmaceutical and Harbin Pharmaceutical. Zhang then served as a vice president in one of his invested companies where he managed operations, investment and financing, restructuring and listing. He was also a partner in the securities department at DHH Law Firm before joining Merits & Tree.

Yu Jie specialises in dispute resolution, intellectual property and antitrust/competition. His efforts in IP work resulted in one case being selected as the intellectual property judicial protection case of the year in Shanghai. Yu is a member of the Belt and Road Research Committee of the Shanghai Lawyers Association. He is qualified to practice in China and New York State and has worked at Jones Day and Monckton Chambers.

Chen Xiao has practiced extensively in bankruptcy and liquidation involving large private companies and state-owned enterprises. His work included acting as bankruptcy administrator for more than 100 creditors and representing debtors in bankruptcy liquidation. Chen has also represented companies on IP issues related to games, short videos and MCN (Multi-Channel Networks) and sits on the Internet and Information Technology Business Research Committee of the Shanghai Bar Association.

Yang Cheng, a member of the Cultural Media Business Research Committee of the Shanghai Bar Association, focuses on IP protection including production and distribution; copyright authorisation and protection; artist brokerage, and commercial operations in domestic foreign-entertainment markets. He worked for a German company in China responsible for its legal, compliance and public relations in China and where he gained extensive experience in government regulation and compliance.

Yu, Chen and Yang worked in Guantao Law Firm where Yu and Chen were partners of the firm.
