Dear Editor,

It was interesting to read Mr Bhushan’s candid insights on corruption and judicial accountability. I agree that it is time to move towards more transparent systems of administration in the judiciary which, until date, has been almost completely devoid of any supervision or regulation.

In this regard, Mr Bhushan offers some new roads for reform. Creating a Judicial Appointment or a Judicial Complaints Commission are good ideas, but we also need better laws and stronger mindsets to enforce these laws.

The Judicial Standards and Accountability Bill, 2010, promises to tackle corruption in the judiciary. There is also a need to ramp up our archaic laws on contempt of court and other procedural regulations that act as obstacles in the trail of judicial accountability.
