After spending some time looking for a head of its pharma and life sciences practice, Jidesh Kumar, the managing partner at King Stubb & Kasiva, gave the job to the man tasked to find the right person.
The firm appointed Sanjay Kumar as a partner and head of the practice in its Mumbai office. He was previously associate vice president and head of legal at Emcure Pharmaceuticals.
Sanjay Kumar came to Jidesh Kumar’s attention as a speaker on life science topics at a legal conference, and the two then became acquainted over the course of many such events. “When I met with Jidesh, he informed me that he was looking at building a pharma and life sciences practice, and asked for my help in hiring people with domain expertise,” the new appointee told India Business Law Journal.
“We interviewed many people and were not able to find the right candidate. One day [Jidesh] called me and asked me to think about moving to the law firm and heading their practice. I thought this was a good opportunity, especially because I have seen King Stubb & Kasiva grow from being a startup in New Delhi to a national law firm.”
Sanjay Kumar has 20 years of experience in the life sciences and health industry. Prior to joining Emcure, he was head of legal ethics and compliance at GSK Consumer Healthcare India. He has also worked in Berlin as the head of legal at Piramal Imaging, from 2012 to 2016, and has worked with Dr Reddys, Hetero and Ranbaxy.
“The time that I spent as an in-house lawyer gave me the opportunity to work with some of the best minds in pharma and life sciences, in India and outside,” he said, adding that it was a desire to see the world “from the other side” that prompted him to move to a law firm after two decades in-house.
The pharma and life sciences practice currently has six lawyers with domain expertise in pharma products and processes, regulatory, pricing and intellectual property. King Stubb & Kasiva is a full-service firm with offices in New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kochi.
