Deepak Singh has joined Chandhiok & Mahajan (C&M) as a partner to lead the firm’s newly integrated technology, digital and AI practice to boost the regulatory defence platform.
“Having served as an in-house counsel for more than two decades—including 10 and a half remarkable years managing complex commercial, regulatory, and litigation matters at Google India—I wanted to leverage this deep, platform-centric experience to guide businesses through a broader array of critical technology issues and help them navigate the emerging digital landscape,” Singh told India Business Law Journal.
Singh’s expertise spans global technology companies on product counselling, digital regulation, strategic litigation, data governance, public policy and regulatory compliance.
“As technology, digital platforms and artificial intelligence face increasing regulatory scrutiny in India, taking the lead of this practice at C&M offers an exciting opportunity to align rapidly evolving tech products with complex, emerging legal frameworks,” Singh said.
Leading a dedicated nine-member team, Singh will collaborate closely with the firm’s venture capital, M&A, competition, capital markets, project finance, real estate and dispute resolution practices to deliver multidisciplinary advice.
“In the long-term, my objective is to establish the premier technology, digital and AI practice in the region, providing business-oriented and solutions-driven advisory to both global as well as emerging Indian enterprises,” Singh told IBLJ.
“The focus is to move away from purely reactive legal defence and instead create robust, proactive regulatory compliance frameworks for our clients in diverse sectors.”
Speaking about the transition, Singh said, “In the broader landscape, the primary challenge is the sheer velocity of regulatory changes. The digital and AI deployment is moving rapidly in various sectors, requiring constant agility regarding the platform’s liability, data protection and online content governance.
“Managing high-stakes legal risks, shaping policy frameworks and resolving complex multi-jurisdictional issues has been the cornerstone of my entire career. I look forward to using my in-house experience and regulatory insights to help our clients smoothly navigate these shifting regulatory tides.”
Singh, who has been in practice for the past 24 years, said, “I began my legal practice with a leading firm, K Ashar & Co, in Mumbai, serving leading banks and technology companies.” He has also served as legal counsel at Yahoo! India followed by eBay India as head of litigation.
