Indian and international companies will soon have to obtain clearances from a new environmental regulator for major projects undertaken in India. The government has announced plans to set up a new regulator called the National Environment Appraisal and Monitoring Authority, which will grant clearances to industry and ensure compliance with green standards.
It is not yet clear how tfhe regulator will be constituted or what shape it will take.
Companies have frequently clashed with environmentalists in India and several projects have been derailed or delayed as a result. Companies that have encountered problems include UK-listed minerals and mining company Vedanta, Korean steelmaker Posco and Hindustan Construction Company, which has been building Lavasa, India’s first planned hill city, located in Maharashtra.
