Dear Sir,

This is in reference to the Vantage Point article entitled “No Trespassing” written by Mr Lalit Bhasin in the June issue of India Business Law Journal.

I am totally speechless at the comment by Mr Bhasin, president of the Society of Indian Law Firms, that “the entry of foreign law firms will create havoc and undermine the noble heritage” of the profession in India. I totally disagree that the entry of foreign law firms will create havoc or undermine the “noble heritage” of the profession.

I have the utmost respect for Mr Bhasin, who has pioneered a lot of changes and supported the legal community, but he ought to know that countries that have opened up to foreign law firms have only benefited. Far from undermining the profession, such opening helps improve services through competition. Mr Bhasin, who acts for many multinational companies in India and lobbies for a more open economy, is trying to be protectionist. I don’t believe that in a global economy, a “protectionist” approach would do the profession or the industry any good.
