Nilufer von Bismarck, partner and co-head of the India practice at Slaughter & May in London, has retired after 31 years at the firm.

Bismarck now serves as independent non-executive director at UK financial services and asset management company Legal & General, sitting on its audit, risk, governance, nominations and technology committees.

“I hope to join some other boards in due course,” she told India Business Law Journal. “I am also doing some academic teaching in law at university level. My plans [for the future] are nascent.”

Bismarck was also the head of Slaughter & May’s equity capital markets practice and its financial institutions group.

“Building the India practice, and Slaughter & May’s position, has been a goal I have strived for,” she said of her achievements at the firm. “I hope I have met this to some degree, and enhanced our reputation and recognition for work with Indian clients. Being a native Indian, it has been a real pleasure to interact with India and its progress. Its development over the last two decades has been phenomenal.”

Bismarck was identified among the top India-focused lawyers in India Business Law Journal’s International A-List 2021.
