Ashurst, an international law firm based in the UK, has handpicked four-month-old Indian Law Partners to be its best friend in India. The referral arrangement, which was announced on 15 July, will see Indian Law Partners and Ashurst “working closely on a mutual referral basis”, Ashurst said.

Ashurst’s India group comprises more than 50 English, US and India-qualified lawyers based in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Indian Law Partners was originally established in 1999 by Gopika Pant, who had left Amarchand Mangaldas shortly beforehand. Piyoosh Gupta, another former Amarchand lawyer, joined Pant as a partner in 2000. The two lawyers accepted partnership positions with DSK Legal in 2004, effectively turning Indian Law Partners into DSK’s Delhi office. But in April this year, they broke away from DSK and re-established Indian Law Partners. The firm has 12 lawyers, including the two partners, and core strengths in cross-border M&A, cross-border finance, strategic investments, private equity and capital markets.
