Age will no longer be a bar against practising the law in Delhi after a senior citizen who is also a qualified lawyer took the Delhi Bar Council to court and won.

The bar council was forced to overturn its rule that lawyers over the age of 45 cannot be enrolled after Prem Chand Kashyap, 60, appealed the bar in the Delhi High Court.

Despite qualifying with a law degree in 1975, Kashyap, a retired Reserve Bank of India manager, had been unable to register with the bar council due to his age.

Speaking to NDTV.com he said: “I had decided that I would practise law after retirement.

“This bar council decision was a big setback to my plans. I thought it was very unfair. I have good health, the education and the competence to be a lawyer so why should I be stopped?”

Six other lawyers joined him in his battle with the bar council.
