Three bar associations in the United States have proposed new rules to govern the outsourcing of legal work overseas. While initial reports have caused alarm in some circles, one of India’s leading outsourcing groups, SQ Global Solutions, is not worried, saying the rules are not expected to have a serious impact on services.

The new norms proposed by the bar associations of New York, Los Angeles and California demand that US law firms advise their clients that some of the work will be performed in India. They also call on the firms to closely monitor the outsourced work to ensure standards.

According to SQ Global Solutions, a New York-based joint venture between Strategic Legal Solutions and Quislex, the norms are more likely to “legitimize” legal outsourcing work than reduce it.

About 15 companies in India provide legal outsourcing services, with the leaders being SQ Global Solutions, Pangea and Mindcrest, according to a rediff.com report.

SQ claims that its adoption of the Six Sigma process has helped to build confidence among its overseas clients of its commitment to maintain high standards.
