To strengthen its litigation team and international arbitration practice, Reed Smith has hired Matthew Townsend as a partner in Hong Kong. Townsend joined from Fangda & Partners in Hong Kong where he was a counsel for almost seven years.

Townsend brings more than a decade of experience in assisting complex arbitration proceedings, including ad-hoc and administered arbitrations under the rules of major institutions and in leading arbitral seats. He focuses on disputes relating to M&A and the energy, infrastructure, construction and technology sectors.

Apart from acting in a number of China-specific arbitration cases, Townsend is also a regular writer and speaker on business and law in China, having authored more than 70 articles and book chapters on arbitration. He regularly acts as an advocate at procedural and merits hearings, and was involved in some of the first Hong Kong-seated arbitrations in which interim relief was sought from the PRC courts under the 2019 Mainland China-Hong Kong interim measures arrangement.
