Rajah & Tann bolsters its China presence with the addition of Shanghai-based international arbitration partner, Hew Kian Heong, previously the head of construction and infrastructure at Kewei Law Firm, Herbert Smith Freehills’ joint operation partner in the country.

This hiring was in response to the recent signing of the China-Singapore Free Trade Agreement, Rajah & Tann said.

The agreement enables Singapore to enhance its access to China’s service sectors, while Singapore investors and service providers will benefit from more liberal and transparent regulations, creating a level playing field for trade and investment with China.

Fluent in English, Mandarin and Cantonese, Hew is qualified to practice in Hong Kong, and England and Wales. He also has a wealth of experience, with seven years at Kewei and 22 years at Pinsent Masons, where he had been promoted as head of China.

Hew focuses on advising clients in construction litigations, arbitrations and mediations across various jurisdictions including the PRC, Hong Kong, Singapore, Stockholm, Geneva and London. He can resolve contractual issues and disputes in the initial stages of a project, mitigating risks and preventing costly litigation and arbitration.

The veteran currently serves as an arbitrator of the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission, the Beijing Arbitration Commission, the Shanghai International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission, and the Chinese Arbitration Association.
