Premji Invest, the investment office of Wipro founder Azim Premji, appointed Vardaan Ahluwalia as its head of legal. Formerly a partner at Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas (CAM), Ahluwalia joined Premji Invest in October.
Commenting on his move into an in-house role, Ahluwalia said he wanted to be “more closely involved” in the commercial side of business.
“Even though it is early days, what stands out for me is the responsibility and exposure,” said Ahluwalia, adding that Premji Invest’s two–lawyer in-house team considered its “external counsel as an extension of our deal team”.
Ahluwalia, who was made a partner at CAM in July 2019, was part of the firm’s insolvency and bankruptcy team. Feeling the need for “a deeper understanding of finance and financial modelling to be a well-rounded commercial lawyer”, he took time off from CAM to do a Master’s degree in finance at Oxford University. His move to Premji Invest coincided with his return from the UK.
