The Indian government has approved significant pay rises for the country’s senior judges, who by international standards are poorly remunerated. At the same time, India’s law minister, HR Bhardwaj, has called for new guidelines on the appointment, remuneration and removal procedures for members of the judiciary.
The High Court and Supreme Court Judges (Salaries and Conditions of Service) Amendment Bill, 2008, was passed by parliament on 19 February. It increases the salary of the chief justice from Rs33,000 (US$635) to Rs100,000 per month.
The salaries of other Supreme Court judges and chief justices of high courts will rise from Rs30,000 to Rs90,000 per month. High court judges, meanwhile, will see their salaries rise from Rs26,000 to Rs80,000 per month.
