Lawyers in the troubled region of Jammu and Kashmir have been drawn into a long-running political dispute after the Indian government added the Kashmir Bar Association (KBA) to its list of 49 separatist organizations operating in the state.
The move was only made public after Aditya Raj Kaul, a Kashmiri Pandit youth activist, filed a right to information application. In response, the bar has sought to convince the government that it is an apolitical organization.
“The KBA is a body of lawyers practising in the Jammu and Kashmir High Court. The advocate general, government advocates, public prosecutors and standing counsels for various government departments, public sector undertakings and banks are its members,” KBA President Mian Abdul Qayoom told the Hindustan Times.
