India and Italy are preparing for diplomatic talks in connection with a shooting incident involving two Italian marines. The incident, which took place on 15 February 2012, resulted in the death of two Indian fishermen. The talks are to decide which country has jurisdiction to try the marines.
The shooting ignited controversy in India, particularly after the Italian government refused to send the two marines, Massimiliano Lattore and Salvatore Girone, back to India to stand trial. The pair had been allowed to return to Italy temporarily to vote in the country’s general elections. The Indian government retaliated by refusing to let Italian ambassador Daniele Mancini leave India. On 2 April, the Supreme Court vacated the restraint order on Mancini’s travel following the return of the two marines. However, the issue of jurisdiction has yet to be settled.
