India Business Law Journal names the outstanding law firms of 2016. Rebecca Abraham reports
For law firms across India 2016 was an interesting year. While a downward pressure on fees continues to be a challenge for firms of all sizes, in-house legal teams that provide an expanding range of services are making their presence felt. Add to this the churn expected within Indian law firms when foreign law firms are allowed into country and the picture that emerges is of a legal market that is facing considerable uncertainty, even as the law firms’ clients confront more complex problems.
Faced with more choice, clients are also less reluctant to speak out if they feel short-changed. Asked by India Business Law Journal to explain a comment on the quality of service provided at a leading law firm, one client said that the partner responsible was “incompetent, lacks commercial understanding, fails to adequately supervise associates, is absolutely horrible when it comes to drafting, made huge multimillion-dollar mistakes in failing to carefully review the drafting, and was obstructive in commercial discussions”.
Be that as it may, across India there are many law firms and lawyers who are intent on building the capacity and wherewithal to provide efficient and innovative solutions for their clients. India Business Law Journal’s 2016 Indian Law Firm Awards honour the best among them.
As in previous years we recognize one firm as the law firm of the year and six firms as best overall law firms. This year we honour six winners in each of 20 practice areas and only one firm in the best newcomers category.
