Trademark owners and IP practitioners have welcomed India’s accession to the Madrid Protocol. The Madrid system allows trademark owners to protect their marks in multiple countries by filing one application directly with a national or regional trademark office in any country that is a member of the Madrid Union. The treaty will be enforced in India from 8 July.
The Madrid Protocol is considered a faster, cheaper and more convenient way to safeguard trademarks in various jurisdictions. Figures from February show that 88 countries have joined the Madrid system. These include Australia, Botswana, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Iran, Israel, Japan, the Netherlands, Singapore, Switzerland, Turkey, the US, the UK and Vietnam.
