Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the internet governing body, has said it will accept applications for new branded and generic top-level domains (TLDs) from 12 January. The result could be branded domain names such as dot-tata, dot-gucci, dot-kingfisher and dot-oberoi, as well as thousands of new generic domain names such as dot-handbags, dot-airlines and dot-kitchenware.
At present, there are only 22 generic top-level domains, of which the best known are dot-com, dot-org and dot-net. ICANN said the new top-level domains could be as inclusive or exclusive as the owners want.
ICANN’s programme has sparked widespread debate among brand owners, who argue that the new TLDs could lead to consumer confusion and increase trademark enforcement obligations. Those in favour of the new domain names say they will encourage innovation and generate business opportunities.
