Hiways Law Firm has strengthened its Shanghai headquarters with the addition of senior partners Liu Xiaoli, Sun Li, Zhang Wei and Zhao Xibao and partner Wang Zhengfang, many of whom have served in the judiciary.

Liu was a senior partner at Kang Qiao Law Firm and served as a public prosecutor at the Zaozhuang Municipal People’s Procuratorate. Her expertise lies in criminal defence, particularly in cases involving abuse of power, bribery by civil servants, significant economic crimes, and offences related to organised crime and gang-like groups.

Liu has successfully represented defendants in criminal cases, including intentional homicide and endangering public safety, resulting in commuted death sentences. Her expertise extends to navigating the complexities at the intersection of civil and criminal matters.

Additionally, Liu serves as a member of the compliance expert pool in Shandong province.

Sun – formerly a partner at Jingtian & Gongcheng and JOIUS Law Firm as well as a former judge in Shanghai – focuses on dispute resolution in finance, real estate and construction, corporate and commercial.

He acted as the lead counsel in a significant sale and purchase contract dispute for Easy Live, where blockchain evidence played a pivotal role. The Shanghai High People’s Court in 2020 recognised this as a reference case.

With years of experience as a public prosecutor, Zhang brings knowledge in handling non-performing assets, including conducting due diligence and acquisitions, and facilitating the subsequent disposal and recovery of non-performing asset packages.

She mainly provided legal services to state-owned enterprises on matters of investment and financing, operation and management, and corporate governance.

Zhao’s extensive involvement in the non-performing assets industry spans nearly 20 years. His advisory services cover corporate restructuring, asset reorganisation, domestic listing and issuance, investments, and M&A. Zhao has proven his expertise in dealing with major complex projects by advising on debt assignments and debt restructurings.

Wang focuses on dispute resolutions in financial management, investment, mergers and acquisitions, and non-performing assets. She has offered legal advice to many banks and companies operating in the securities, asset management, trust, and financial leasing sectors.

Previously, Wang started in a court and arbitration institute for several years, then moved to Jingtian & Gongcheng and Dacheng Law Offices.
