Shandong Gold Mining’s (SDG) recent acquisition of shares in the Veladero gold mine in Argentina was fraught with thorny regulatory and environmental issues, said the legal counsel involved.
“Compared to other mining acquisitions I have worked on, Veladero, due to its sensitive location, has more regulatory issues and faces more environmental challenges,” Wang Yi, a partner and head of Norton Rose Fulbright’s Beijing office, told China Business Law Journal.
The gold mine, located in the Border Security Zone of Argentina, is also close to glaciers and within the multiple zone of the San Guillermo Biosphere Reserve area as identified by UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
