Former US ambassador to China and secretary of commerce Gary Locke has joined Dorsey as a senior adviser.

During Barack Obama’s presidency, Locke served as US secretary of commerce, throughout which he spearheaded the creation of the “Select USA” programme to encourage foreign direct investment and led the Bureau of Industry and Security, responsible for overseeing and enforcing US export control rules.

From 2011 to 2014, Locke served as US ambassador to China, becoming the first Chinese-American to hold the post.

Bill Stoeri, Dorsey’s managing partner, said: “Gary’s experience in foreign direct investment in the US is particularly important in the current economic landscape. His comprehensive understanding of federal and state governance as well as international relationships and commerce will also provide invaluable guidance to clients seeking to navigate regional nuances.”

Catherine Pan-Giordano, chair of Dorsey’s US-China practice group, said Locke’s commitment to fostering global investment and positive relationships between nations would greatly enhance the firm’s ability to serve clients in navigating the international business landscape.

The US-headquartered Dorsey maintains a presence in China with three offices located in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing.
