On 24 January, the chief justice of Calcutta High Court, Arun Mishra, inaugurated India’s first court for women. Located in Malda, north of Kolkata, the court will have an additional district and sessions court and a judicial magistrate’s court under it. It will deal exclusively with crimes against women and will have women judges and staff.
The court was inaugurated a day after a three-member committee set up within a few days of a gang rape in Delhi in December recommended amendments to a proposed Criminal Law Amendment Act, 2012, “to secure public confidence”.
