The federal government has notified new E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022, in force from 1 April 2023. The laws replace the previous E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2016.

The new rules aim to reduce the use of hazardous substances such as lead, mercury and cadmium in the manufacture of electrical equipment, and set specific targets for the collection and disposal of e-waste.

The rules outline all parties’ responsibilities, such as maintaining records of e-waste and taking steps to reduce it. Waste disposal must be environmentally friendly.

The notification has added two new entries in schedule II, which are exempted from the requirements of sub-rule (1) of rule 16, effective from 1 April 2023. The two entries include cadmium and lead in solar panels/cells, and lead in medical devices, with the exception of all implanted and medical waste products.
