Sensing the growth and significance of internet protocol television (IPTV) and to enable consumers to have access to television content through broadband connections, the Union Cabinet on 21 August approved guidelines to allow broadcasters to share their content with IPTV service providers.

A general definition of IPTV is television content that, instead of being delivered through traditional broadcast and cable formats, is received by the viewer through technologies used for computer networks.

Sony_Entertainment_Television_advert_5The guidelines permit the following operators to provide IPTV services: telecom service providers with a licence to provide triple play services; internet service providers (ISPs) valued at over Rs1 billion (US$20 million) with the relevant approval; any other telecom service provider authorized by the Department of Telecom (DoT) and cable TV operators registered under the Cable Television Network (Regulation) Act, 1995.
