It may have lost Robert Lewis, but on the eve of its merger with Hogan & Hartson, Lovells announced that Adrian Emch was joining the firm as a consultant based in Beijing. He will lead the combined firm’s China competition practice.

Emch has experience of advising international companies on competition law, including EU and China merger control, the coordination of multi-jurisdictional merger filings, cartel investigations by the European Commission, litigation, investigations on potential abuses of a dominant position and the application of competition law rules to state measures.

Emch joins from Sidley Austin in Beijing, having previously practised with Clifford Chance’s European competition group. Earlier he completed an internship with the directorate-general for competition at the European Commission. He speaks Chinese, English, French, German and Spanish.

Commenting on the appointment, Hogan Lovells’ head of competition, Susan Bright, said: “Adrian has that rare combination of ability and experience necessary to handle complex competition law issues in China. His China and EU competition experience is supported by his broad linguistic capability. “
