Dear Madam,
The case before Bombay High Court regarding the Indian liaison offices of three foreign law firms (Verdict due on foreign law firms, IBLJ, volume 2, issue 6) has once again focused attention on the opening up of India’s legal market and the country’s obligation to do so under the WTO’s General Agreement on Trade in Services.
The question has, expectedly, evoked polar reactions from all stakeholders about whether liberalization is attainable without prejudicing the national interest.
Perhaps the most notable voice of dissent is that of the Bar Council of India, which has opposed the entry of foreign law firms into the country. The Bar Council contends that the move would adversely affect Indian lawyers.
