Dear Editor,
This refers to Kanan Dhru’s opinion, Glass ceilings, carried in your February issue. India is a vast and immensely diverse jurisdiction. Its 30-judge Supreme Court, 21 high courts, over 600 district courts, multitudes of tribunals and lawyers (with varying training, education and mother tongues) comprise the legal fraternity.
One can say almost anything about a jurisdiction as wide and diverse as this and it may well be partly true. In that sense, the opinion of Dhru is also partly true. To say that in the legal profession (as in life) connections matter, is to acknowledge a simple fact of life. But to suggest that only connections matter is to ignore some other facts of life.
So many factors can give one a leg up in life (and in the profession).
