English magic circle firm Slaughter and May has reportedly been discussing plans to send some of its legal work offshore. As one of the UK’s pre-eminent law firms – and one which was previously adamant it would not resort to such alternatives – Slaughter and May’s newfound willingness to consider the outsourcing route has come as a surprise to many in the legal profession.
According to The Lawyer the firm has been in talks with several legal process outsourcing (LPO) providers about the possibility of sending low-level legal work, such as due diligence and documentation reviews, offshore following a request by an unnamed client.
Outsourcing legal work to destinations such as India and the Philippines has become an attractive option for many clients seeking to reduce their legal costs. Slaughter and May is not alone in heeding its clients’ desires: firms such as Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Linklaters are also believed to be considering the outsourcing option.
