Skimming the surface

Dear Editor,

I refer to the article Clubs are trumps in the September 2014 issue of your journal. While it’s an interesting article, I think it only skims the surface as far as understanding and appreciating what a law firm network is.

I think most firms aspire to be part of these so-called exclusive networks more because it’s exclusive than anything else. Firms join expecting lots of international referral work to come their way, but that’s not always the case. While work does come in, it happens over time, and more because of the relationships you make than because you are part of the same network.

There is also the high cost of staying in a network. The annual membership fee and the conferences that are organised are both fairly expensive propositions and not everyone sees merit in spending that sort of money unless there is a reasonable return on the investment.
