The Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) Singapore has collaborated with the Singapore International Mediation Centre (SIMC) for a lunchtime webinar on the challenges and potential pitfalls of managing business risk for in-house counsel and C-suite level executives.
Topics covered in the 14 January event included dispute resolution and the benefits of mediation.
Chuan Wee Meng, the chief executive officer and an accredited mediator of the SIMC, shared insights on his experiences in China, when he was general counsel of IBM Asia-Pacific, and as a user of mediation.
Chuan also made the case for the relevance of institutional mediation as a cost and time-efficient option for businesses to simultaneously advance their interests and preserve amity in their relationships.
He explained that understanding the scope of dispute resolution options available, and knowing when and how to take advantage of the appropriate tool, are key for international businesses to effectively navigate the complexities of cross-border commercial transactions and partnerships.
Antony Cook, an associate general counsel of Microsoft Operations in Asia, also joined the discussion in his role as a longstanding ACC Singapore board member, and shared his experiences and benefits of using mediation.
