Philipp Senff, a former partner and head of compliance at CMS China, has joined German interdisciplinary consulting firm RSM Ebner Stolz as partner and head of compliance at its Shanghai office.

Ebner Stolz, who entered the Chinese mainland market in 2018 and joined the global RSM network in 2023, is one of the largest assurance, tax, legal and consulting firms in Germany. With offices in Shanghai and Beijing, the firm provides audit, tax and legal advice to international clients doing business in China, its website states.

“Ebner Stolz China has a strong reputation for legal and tax advice for European, specifically for German, clients in China,” Senff told China Business Law Journal. In addition to legal and tax advice, he highlighted the firm’s ability to offer financial forensic support, namely performing financial checks over the accounts and books.

“This is an ‘added value’ specifically in conjunction with anti-corruption and fraud investigations in China,” he said.

Senff has nearly 20 years’ experience in China-related compliance and risk management matters, including nearly a decade at CMS. Prior to joining CMS, he served as the legal director of corporate, compliance and risk management at Pinsent Masons in Shanghai.

Earlier in his career, he was head of the Shanghai office of SJ Berwin, a London-based “silver circle” firm that merged with King & Wood Mallesons in 2013 (now split into King & Wood and Mallesons).
