Telecom operators have started placing bids in India’s auction for third generation (3G) licences. The auction is expected to generate at least US$8 billion and could last for several weeks.
Nine telecoms companies, including Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Essar and Tata DoCoMo, are bidding for three pan India licences that will cover 22 regions. Prices for the licence start at Rs35 billion (US$789 million).
“The auction has started and it is going smoothly,” said a telecom ministry official.
