New India head at Simmons & Simmons

Shashwat Patel has joined Simmons & Simmons as counsel and the head of India in the firm’s corporate group in London. Patel joins from Debevoise & Plimpton (D&P) in London, where he was a senior associate.

“The Simmons platform has solid brand equity, including in India,” Patel told India Business Law Journal, adding that the firm had a presence in many key cities in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

“I was an active member of the India practice group at D&P. The overall practice at Simmons is slightly different, though, and this is more of a leadership role in some senses, which will likely bring me closer to India in terms of travel, work and relationships.”

Patel said he would develop a holistic strategy to increase the firm’s profile and presence in India. “I have strong personal and professional roots in India, and I keenly follow developments in the market.”

On India-related matters, Patel has experience in inbound and outbound M&A and private equity. He was with D&P for seven years, and worked with partners Lord Goldsmith and Geoff Burgess on India-related matters during this time.

He started his career at Amarchand & Mangaldas in Mumbai, in 2009, prior to the firm’s split. Patel is a tri-qualified lawyer with qualifications in England & Wales, New York and India.
