Foreign companies are under heavy scrutiny regarding their dealings in China, an expert warned, after reports surfaced of Microsoft being under investigation by US authorities for allegedly bribing Chinese government officials to win business.
“We believe US businesses with operations in China are under increased US government scrutiny,” Tadashi Kageyama, senior managing director and head of Kroll’s Asia operations, told China Business Law Journal.
“According to various media reports, the SEC [US Securities and Exchange Commission] has become increasingly concerned about the culture of ‘gift giving’ in emerging markets such as China, where guidelines over appropriate behaviour in this regard remain lax.”
In the past year, Kroll’s China team has been involved in a number of investigations into bribery and kickbacks, employee fraud, supply chain fraud and other corruption.
