Merits & Tree Law Offices continues its expansion strategy with the hiring of Gu Jing, Cai Guoqiang and Zhang Jianxin as partners.

With nearly 30 years’ experience, Gu sits as an arbitrator at the Shanghai Arbitration Commission and Shanghai International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission.

In 1994, Gu teamed up with four legal professionals to establish the Hongqiao Law Firm. After six years, he founded Jingda Law Firm where he served as a director for 11 years, before joining W&H in 2012.

Cai has a JD degree from Kobe University in Japan and worked as an in-house counsel for a Japanese company, which cultivated his strong suit in Japan-related legal advice.

Based in Shenzhen, Zhang, who previously worked at King & Wood Mallesons, specialises in special assets and bankruptcy restructuring as well as dispute resolution.

He is also a member of the first Personal Bankruptcy Practice Committee of the Shenzhen Bankruptcy Administrators Association, and has been involved in the reorganisation of both listed and unlisted companies.

Some of his work has been recognised and selected as one of the Top Ten Typical Bankruptcy Cases and Top Ten Commercial Cases by the Supreme People’s Court, as well as the typical cases by the High People’s Court in Shaanxi, Henan and Guangdong.
