Mayer Brown has deepened its banking and finance practice bench in Asia with the hire of Janelene Chen, who was most recently at Norton Rose Fulbright, as a partner in the US firm’s Singapore office.

“The multitrillion-dollar global trade finance market is complex and risky to navigate for lenders and borrowers alike,” said Alex Dell, co-head of Mayer Brown’s global banking and finance practice and co-chair of the global trade finance group.

“Having Janelene on the ground in Singapore, an increasingly important financial and trading hub, advising on structured finance and risk management solutions to multijurisdictional clients significantly deepens our leading global finance platform.”

Chen, who will focus on trade and other structured finance transactions, has a legal career spanning 17 years having started as a banking and finance associate at Singapore law firm WongPartnership in 2007.

Dual qualified in English and Singapore law, the banking and finance lawyer has advised financial institutions and corporate borrowers on matters ranging from cross-border financings to structured lending and general banking.

With her dual qualifications, most of the cross-border transactions she has acted on have covered the Southeast Asia region, where deals are governed by either English or Singapore law, as well other Asia jurisdictions including Hong Kong and mainland China.
