Dear Sir,
As India slowly but surely opens every possible sector to the foreign market, legal services cannot be left behind. To discuss this, the Ministry of Law called an interactive session on 17 September 2007, which I attended.
After the two-hour session, three groups had emerged: Those in favour, those against and those undecided.
I explored some of the options in my blog, lexevangelist.blogspot.com, but to summarize: The group in favour of opening the market was made up of big law firms with substantial market share who are unwilling to give it up. A second group, against the opening, was made up of firms with deals in place with foreign firms that want to strengthen their position. A third group of undecided don’t really care about the issue. After the session, the ministry said it would come up with a draft within a few months.
