Hundreds of lawyers at the Allahabad High Court and district court took to the streets in mid-May after the death of a fellow lawyer while in police custody.
The lawyers clashed with police in central Allahabad, throwing stones, setting a bus alight and blocking roads, to vent their anger at the death of high court advocate SP Awasthi. The fire from the burning bus set alight two other vehicles nearby, NewKerala.com reported.
The lawyers say Awasthi, who was sentenced to one month in jail for contempt of court, was tortured and chained to his hospital bed. He was admitted to hospital after his health declined while in custody.
