Acase against foreign law firms that has been languishing in Madras High Court for over a year has been adjourned yet again. It is now scheduled to be heard on 2 August. The delay resulted from a request from the Indian government for an extension of time to compile its submission.
The case was last heard on 8 March and was adjourned to 19 April on the ground of ongoing discussions between the government, the Bar Council of India and the Law Ministry.
An affidavit filed by the government states that the Ministry of Law and Justice is contemplating the amendment of section 29 of the Advocates Act, 1961, in order to allow foreign law firms to advise on “non-litigious matters” in India. R Jayalakshmi, an assistant legal adviser at the ministry, requested in writing: “It is, therefore, prayed that this honourable court may be pleased to extend the time further to consult the Bar Council of India and take decision in the matter.”
