India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) announced in February that the government would give preference to domestically manufactured products when procuring telecom products for its own use or that have security implications for the country.

The DoT issued a notification on 5 October to further this policy. Below are some key features of the notification.

The notification mandates that domestically manufactured telecom products must be given preference when such products are procured by government departments and agencies for their own use and not with a view to commercial resale or use in the production of goods for commercial sale.

Applicability

The notification applies to all government ministries and departments (except the Ministry of Defence) and the agencies under their administrative control, and to all government-funded telecom projects.
