Dua Associates advised Hughes Communications India, a subsidiary of Hughes Network Systems, in its joint venture with Bharti Airtel to combine their VSAT (very small aperture terminal) satellite operations in India. AZB & Partners advised Bharti Airtel.

The closing of the INR997.5 million (USD14.1 million) deal was announced on 5 January 2022. It was first signed in May 2019.

Dua’s team was led by partners Sita Khosla, Vikram Dhokalia and Nirvaan Gupta, while partner Gautam Shahi advised on competition law matters, and partner Sanjeev Kaul advised on company and trust law issues.

AZB & Partners’ team, which worked on the deal when it was signed, comprised partners Vinati Kastia, Abhishek Shinde (who has left the firm) and Bharat Apte, senior associate Harsh Kabra, and associate Shantanu Tiwari.

Through the deal Hughes Communications India acquired the VSAT business of Bharti Airtel, and HCIL Comtel acquired the VSAT business of Bharti Airtel Services. Hughes Communications is expected to have majority ownership in the joint venture company.
