David Tang, formerly senior counsel at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pitman, has recently become a partner at AllBright in Shanghai.

Tang’s professional experience includes positions with government, multinationals and law firms. Before joining AllBright, he worked as a member of the China practice groups at Coudert Brothers and Pillsbury for more than 14 years, focusing on both inbound and outbound corporate work.

“There’s a broader scope of growth and there are better opportunities at domestic firms,” said Tang, explaining his decision, “especially since there are strict restrictions imposed on international firms.

“Domestic firms are upgrading themselves and they know exactly what they want. They want the international books of business that new lawyers bring with them and they want those who have an international stance so they can move onto an international platform where they will be leaders,” he continued.

This year has seen a number of Chinese law firms hiring partners from international firms to develop their international business practices and increase their capabilities in advising on cross-border transactions. Tang’s appointment follows AllBright’s recruitment in recent months of Lovell’s former Beijing managing partner Robert Lewis, former Simmons & Simmons consultant Richard Lee and former K&L Gates partner Louis Meng.
