The need for judicial reform in India came under the spotlight in October after journalists and campaigners launched widespread protests against alleged corruption in the Supreme Court.
The protest came after the Delhi High Court handed out prison sentences to staff of the Mid Day newspaper for contempt of court over their investigative exposé of alleged corruption in the Supreme Court.
Mid Day had alleged that a retired chief justice of the Supreme Court, YK Sabharwal, might have assisted his sons’ business interests by ordering the closure of thousands of businesses in residential areas.
