More than 350 in-house lawyers from across Australia and New Zealand gathered in Adelaide recently for the 25th Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) Australia National Conference at the iconic Adelaide Oval.
The three-day event featured keynote presentations from Stephen Scheeler, former CEO of Facebook Australia and New Zealand, speaking on disruptive leadership in the digital age; and leading demographer Bernard Salt, who spoke about planning for tomorrow’s workforce in an evolving workplace landscape.
The event also featured a range of panel discussions and presentations analyzing the evolving role of in-house lawyers and in-house legal departments.
A highlight of the event was the 2019 in-house lawyer awards dinner. The Australian in-house lawyer awards are the only in-house legal awards where the winners are judged exclusively by their peers and therefore represent the most sought-after recognition within the in-house sector.
Among the winners announced on the night were 2019 Corporate Lawyer of the Year, Amy Spira, senior legal counsel at Domain Group, and Large Legal Team of the Year, DXC Technology. Other award winners announced on the night were: Young Lawyer Achiever of the Year, Kelly Xiao, senior associate corporate counsel, VMWare; Excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility, Pernod Ricard Winemakers; and Legal Team of the Year (small), Pacific National.
The next ACC regional conference for in-house counsel will be the 2020 ACC Asia-Pacific Annual Meeting in Singapore from 24-26 March. With a theme of the “Asian Century”, this event will provide a range of insights and updates on the delivery of in-house services in Asia, and provide a wealth of information for in-house lawyers either currently working in Asia or working for organizations that are seeking to broaden their footprint in the region.
The opening keynote address for the conference will be delivered by Trevor Faure, author, lawyer, and CEO of Smarter Law Solutions. Based upon lessons learned from an in-house career that has spanned Ernst & Young, Apple, Dell, Tyco, and multiple legal department consultancies since, Faure has developed an uncommon depth of expertise on navigating existential corporate change and challenges.
In this address he will evangelise the “Magnificent 7” ways an in-house lawyer can get closer to the business, while overcoming the “Maleficent 7” reasons why we resist and avoid change. You don’t want to miss this. For more information visit: www.acc.com/apac2020.
