Paul Weiss will be closing its sole office in the mainland, China Business Law Journal has confirmed.
The firm’s spokesperson said: “We will close our Beijing office at the end of the year. We remain committed to having a strong presence across Asia, including in Hong Kong and Tokyo, and will continue to provide the highest-quality service to our clients in all of our global offices.” However, she did not address the reason behind the closure.
The Paul Weiss website states that the Beijing office houses four corporate lawyers including veteran partner Greg Liu, and the spokesperson has not revealed their upcoming movements.
Liu, who has been with Paul Weiss for 22 years, is the only partner based at the Beijing office and has been the branch’s chief representative. He is a specialist in M&A and private investment and public equity matters.
Paul Weiss joins other foreign law firms that have closed their offices in China since last year, with some shutting to cut costs. Departees that have recently bid farewell to the mainland include WilmerHale and Skadden.
