Shanwu Yuan, a former senior official in China’s State Administration of Taxation (SAT), has joined Baker & McKenzie’s global tax practice as a director.
Yuan brings to the firm over 17 years of experience, having served as China’s delegate to tax and transfer pricing technical working groups at international organisations including the United Nations and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, and he has interacted with the World Bank and International Monetary Fund in the area of taxation.
“For us it’s the first time we’ve hired a tax official from the Chinese government,” Hong Kong-based Michael Olesnicky, head of Baker & McKenzie’s Asia Pacific Tax Practice Group, told China Business Law Journal. “We’ve done similar recruitments in the US and other countries.
