Chicago-based law firm McDermott Will & Emery has appointed Peter Lu as a partner and the global head of its China practice, based in its London office.

Lu, who was a Baker McKenzie partner, brings 14 years of experience in cross-border M&A, joint ventures, governance matters, restructurings, dispute resolution and crisis management. He also has advised clients such as Bank of China, the China Aviation Industry Corporation, China Telecom and ICBC.

The move aims to enhance McDermott’s China-Europe transactions, given that China is currently the EU’s largest trading partner, and outbound investment from Chinese investors into the EU remains strong, says Harris Siskind, the global head of McDermott’s transactions practice.

In 2019, McDermott closed its Seoul office and ended its 13-year partnership with Yuanda China Law Firm, but in 2021, it established a Singapore office, its only branch in Asia at present, to restore the firm’s presence in the regional legal market.
